Annual ryegrass can be planted almost year around. As long as nighttime temperatures are above 40 degrees and daytime temperatures are above 55 degrees, adequate germination and growth can be accomplished. Fall ... South: September through March, depending on location. Fall ... North: August through October. Spring: As soon as the temperatures are adequate. Can be frost seeded. If overseeding warm-season pastures, mow or graze warm-season grasses short before planting annual ryegrass to aid in establishment.

Annual ryegrass likes nitrogen. Apply minimum 50 lbs/acre N at planting time and add 25-50 lbs/acre between intensive grazing periods for a total of up to 250 lbs. annually. Always take a soil sample and follow local recommendations for nutrient requirements. Annual ryegrass will tolerate acid soils down to 5 pH, but will perform best between pH 6-7. Addition of lime may be indicated by soil test.

Graze lightly when grass reaches 6 inches. Never graze below a 3" height to maximize photosynthesis and regrowth rates. Short, intensive grazing is better than long, light grazing. Rotate out to rest and regrow between 2 and 3 weeks, depending on speed of regrowth. Avoid grazing when grass is frozen, as forage waste and stand damage will occur. If making hay or silage, highest quality will be at pre-boot stage. This will allow maximum regrowth potential for multiple cuttings.
